This month, I continue my series of articles about the signs. June is all about Gemini. I wish to explain
the children of the quicksilver to you, and on the way I will enlarge upon the subject of Mercury, the
planet that governs their sign. The key is to ask Gemini what is going on in her head. Like that literary
child of mystery, Alice in Wonderland, they are always trying to figure things out. Ask them the way,
and they will tell you, although they still may not know the ultimate answer themselves.
Have you ever noticed that some people are mercurial? This word is an attempt to symbolize the
nature of a restless being. The symbolism around these changeable, mentally alert natives
consistently refers to their mental qualities. They are seekers of information. Gemini people are not
interested in finding the meaning of the big picture so much as knowing what is going on around
them. They are information based and they need all forms of communication to make sense of life.
We are used to seeing the messenger of the gods, Hermes or Mercury, with wings on his feet. This is
a symbol of the freedom impulse of the mind. Gemini’s ruling planet is Mercury, the planet of
communication and applied mentality. He is an amoral character who does what he wants. He is the
most brilliant and dazzling of the gods, where it comes to clever speech and thought, lightening fast
solutions and awareness of local conditions. The fast moving mental processes of a Gemini can
make you feel like a rock. The messenger of the gods had a moral quest to decide what is right. As
they explore the truth they often practice a kind of situational ethics without committing to a particular
    creed or belief system. Most
Gemini’s are open minded to new ideas. Their most difficult issue is focus and attention. In my
studies of communication as an art and a social science, I found a word that applies to Gemini very
well.  “Phatic” communication is said to be about making small talk. It is the use of speech for informal
exchange of views or ideas or information. There are two purposes small talk: to open connections
with others and to provide emotional stability and security. Small talk provides feedback from the
immediate environment; you know your status at every moment. Phatic communication is similar to
the way birds interact, constantly exchanging information in chirping and clucking. The least important
element is the meaning of the words spoken.
What does your Gemini need from you? He or she needs communication. Please don’t be stingy. You
may think they don’t want to hear what you have to say, but that is not true. If you feel like it is too much
effort to butt in, please understand that by talking constantly, they are asking help to fill an information
gap. Be kind but don’t be too patient with your friend and lover. They will thank you in the long run for
your care and concern for not letting them talk too much. Help them by reminding them of that the
information is there and available. However, you must be diplomatic!
Those who truly understand our spring people know that they can heal and become conscious of the
duality that haunts them. They suffer with mood changes and uncontrollable thinking that drives them
into a kind of nervous condition where they can’t rest. If they can integrate mind and heart they are
capable of focused and productive output like good Capricorns. They make great entertainers, they
can out sing and out dance the Leos. And no one can compete with Gemini in the mental realm of
pure brilliance, where they are most comfortable.
Gemini and the ruler, Mercury, are all about getting the story, finding out what is going on. A Gemini
can give you the story just like a reporter for the old fashioned newspapers. He or she is constantly
aware the news of the day and the hour. The most essentially Mercurial job around has to be the daily
grind putting out a paper. To produce a newspaper, there needs to be a local staff of people to gather
news (Gemini), write ad copy (clever Gemini), print the paper, (Mercurial and technically savvy Virgo
and Gemini), doing the technical and intellectual work to get it out every day. They are all in their
element with the deadline. Now I know you may say you are the exception, but Gemini people like
outside pressure. It provides the necessary push to ground their lovely mental gifts.
It is important to understand that language is tied to Gemini and what she needs for happiness. The
proof of this is in the body itself. Mercury and Gemini govern the hands, arms and lungs. Please
observe you friend the Gemini. Doesn’t he use his hands arms and lungs all at once? Pacing, talking
and very often smoking up a storm, Gemini thrives with mental activity. Their bodies are the engines
of how their thinking goes. Hands, gesture, lungs provide air for words, and cigarettes are a glow
stick of fire for emphasis. They really use their organs of expressiveness. Ask them to stop smoking
and you will get a fight. If you love a Gemini please understand that you have hitched your wagon to a
mystery wrapped in an enigma. Who can understand a chameleon? They are awash in
contradictions. Gemini is able to ignore their bodies and still look sexy. It is because they have sexy
minds. They are big on mental feats of acrobatic brilliance. They can be a huge help in problem
solving and inventive solutions. They are great friends. They have lots of communication for you and
lots of ideas to generate with you.
What is the dark side that everyone talks about? Our spring born friends are all innocent, from Aries,
Taurus to Gemini. They are not the least in touch with their dark side. They only intellectually
understand that they have an alter ego. Gemini people are the favored by the gods of intelligence but
their downfall is emotional insecurity. They are not loners, not good in isolation. A happy Gemini is
someone who has her finger on the pulse of everything and feels secure that things can stay stable, at
least for a while. An unhappy Gemini is in a bad relationship where she is denied the comfort of
phatic communication with the reassurances it brings. She receives cold feedback from other signs
that don’t care for phatic communication or who don’t need it.
Actress Judy Garland was a Gemini. She had talent, a Gemini trait. She had brilliance and fragility, as
most of you know, She was prone to breakdowns and addiction issues. It is hard to understand how
our dear innocent children of Mercury could ever become distraught. It is simply the mind’s world
where they live. Give them some compassion for the fact that they are sometimes over-analytical, a
trait that quashes romance. A mental world of flexibility and adaptability requires a fast nervous
system. Give your Gemini friend or lover some flexibility as well, but not too much. You want them to
    know that you care.
In my opinion, it is friendship where a Gemini shines in their moral quest to discern what is right.
Personal relationships are where they can show their greatest light of loyalty and truth. It is also in
friendship and love where you find Gemini people to be most disappointing. When they flirt or choose
someone else, it is hard not to be mad. Try to forgive them. The sweet, engaging child you fell in love
with has not gone away. She is just in hiding till you get over your unreasonable anger over her
    choices.
Well, I will call it a night for now. There will always be more stories about the Children of the
Quicksilver and their deeds. I will tell more tomorrow, when the sun is high in the sky, at the hour that
    reminds me of summer.
